The Digital Arabic Content Competitions Open the Doors for Digital Products in Arabic

ESCWA launched the digital Arabic content (DAC) competitions in each of Palestine, Yemen and Lebanon under the slogan “Thinking digital? Let’s innovate in Arabic”. The competitions aimed at selecting the best and most innovative ideas in the field of DAC.

Arab IGF Open Consultations and AMAG Fifth Meeting convened in Cairo

Hosted by the League of Arab States (LAS), the Open Consultations and Fifth Meeting of the Arab Multistakeholder Advisory Group (AMAG) were held in Cairo, during 11-13 March 2014. The meetings gave a unique opportunity for open dialogue and engagement of all stakeholders in the discussions of Internet governance issues of importance to the Arab region.

Advisory Missions in the 1st Quarter, 2014

During the first quarter of 2014 ICTD Regional Adviser, Nawar Al-Awa, conducted missions to several countries in the region, where he visited institutions and met with government officials on issues related to information and communication technology and development:

– In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia the e-services delivered by the Ministry of Social Affairs were explored and recommendations were made on how to enhance the deployment of these services.

– In Tunisia support was given to the High Engineering School of Telecommunications on their 2014 entrepreneurship contest and areas of collaboration were explored.

– In Yemen four assignments were carried out. The first was recommendations to the National Information Centre on project implementation, the second was recommendations on Prime Ministry Business Process Reengineering and the third was a workshop focusing on automation and electronic applications, and the fourth was an advisory on the establishment of a Science, Technology and Innovation Observatory..

E-Government Programme Directors Meeting at the Government Summit 2014- Dubai, United Arab Emirates

The Information and Communication Technology Division (ICTD) at UN-ESCWA, in collaboration with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), co-organized a meeting of Arab e-Government programme directors, on February 9, 2014, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as a side event of the Government Summit 2014.

Measuring the Use and Impact of ICT on Social and Economic Development

The workshop aimed to raise the awareness and build the capacities of relevant institutions in the region with regard to the understanding and application of ICT use and impact measurement. It examined available frameworks, measurement models, and means to assess and measure the use of ICT and its services, specifically e-government, as well as its impact on Arab youth.
